The Five Scripts

Seal Script 篆书: the oldest standard form of Chinese writing. It was used on bronze vessels and imperial seals over two thousand years ago. The lines are even, rounded, and solemn — like carving into stone.

Clerical Script 隶书: was created by government clerks in the Han Dynasty. Writing became flatter and wider. You can see the special “silkworm head and wild goose tail” strokes — the beginning of brush expression.

Regular Script 楷书 (standing style): is the standard form still taught in Chinese schools today.
Clear, balanced, and readable — this is the foundation of all calligraphy training.

Running Script 行书: is semi-cursive. The brush begins to move freely, connecting strokes naturally. It feels like handwriting — elegant but still readable.

Cursive Script (running style) 草书: the most expressive form.
The characters are no longer drawn. They are performed.
The brush records movement, rhythm, and emotion, almost like music.
